AUGUSTA, Maine -- Wildlife and conservation education programs and tours at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Education facilities; the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray and the Swan Island Wildlife Management Area in Richmond, serve a variety of student audiences. Close to 3,000 children annually participate in wildlife programs and tours at both facilities. Both sites are wonderful educational places for field trips, and are exceedingly affordable! Special School Program Fees are just $2.50 per student, teacher, parent and/or chaperone; and include the wildlife program or tour and admission to the rest of the facility for that day. The Maine Wildlife Park, located on Route 26 in Gray, has over 25 different species of native Maine wildlife are on exhibit, with nature trails, interactive exhibits and displays, a nature store, a 'snack shack', large picnic area, and more! The beautiful and unique Swan Island Wildlife Management Area is located on the Kennebec River in Richmond. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 6 standing island homes date back to the 1700s. The island is rich in human and natural history, and sightings of deer, wild turkeys, and bald eagles are frequent. Although it is a bit more logistically challenging to get onto the Island, once teachers and students experience this unique place they'll want to come back again and again! This fall we have as extensive a program schedule as ever, Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:30am now through October 14th on Swan Island; and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00am and 11:00am now through October 28th at the wildlife park. Education Program Topics include turtles, big cats, beavers, wetlands, owls, fish, bird adaptations, wildlife trees, and more! Teachers that sign up for one of these wildlife programs or a tour will receive a packet of wildlife information that can be utilized prior to and during the field trip to the park. Look for the full schedule on our web site at www.mefishwildlife.com, or call us at 287-5244 to make reservations or request a paper copy of the schedule. Hope to see you at the Wildlife Park with your students this year! |
