The Road
By Bruce E. Hanson
Crunching with gravel,
The road winds back through time.
Not for speed, the road was built,
More accommodating to the land
Than conquering it.
Slowing down is required to pass its length.
In the season of Summer,
People come.
With dishes in their hands
And smiles on their faces,
The children of the road makers,
They partake of its slowness as they arrive.
They come to celebrate old times,
To renew old friendships
And to make new ones.
Then gather themselves,
Empty dishes and full hearts,
And depart by the ever accelerating road.
